What it is & why we use it

HoudiniEsq is a cloud-based legal practice management system built specifically for law firms and legal teams. How we use it internally

We run all case files, client comms, and billing inside HoudiniEsq so everything’s centralised.

The calendar sync is critical — client calls, court deadlines, and contract milestones automatically feed into our team calendars.

Document automation has been a huge time-saver. Draft contracts and NDAs now get generated from templates instead of starting from scratch.

A licensed paralegal with a stong technical background

I am a Licensed Paralegal located in Ontario Canada. I am licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to provide legal services to clients without the supervision of a lawyer within my jurisdiction. I have been using the HoudiniEsq Sole Proprietor version of this docketing system over four years now.

Previous to becoming a licensed Paralegal; my background is an Information Technology (IT) Certified Engineer, and I am also Privacy Certified, providing Computer Consulting, Security & Integration services to my clients for over twenty five (25) years.

Previous to using the HoudiniEsq application

I have tried several other legal based docketing systems, with much frustration, and poor support communications provided by the vendors. The vendors support systems were exclusively conducted over multiple emails, when a one (1) minute call would have sufficed. The systems all had “issues” which I would identify, and try to provide to the support entities, but again the support systems were exclusively over multiple emails, when a one (1) minute call would have sufficed, and worse, were not resolved or were semi-completed. NOTE Retrieving my data from the web based docketing system app was a nightmare, to put it as nicely as I can. I still shutter at the unbelievable billable hours I wasted in attempting to retrieve my data.

Initially

I tried HoudiniEsq due to it’s very attractive price point, and that it was a local / on-site based solution, which meant I had complete control over my data, for backing up, based my own schedule, archiving process, and data recovery purposes. However the most important feature for my comfort level was; that ALL the data is located in Canada, my office, behind my Firewall.

Upon implementation

At first view, the interface is very clean and straight forward, then you start to use the HoudiniEsq system, and begin to appreciate it’s capabilities and power.

The security levels are many, varied, and met my exacting standards.

You are not required to integrate other third party applications such as financial, or document processing applications, but YOU CAN!

The capability is there if you desire to use it, and even without the third party applications, this product stands on it’s own and provides any docketing and document importing support a business may require, whether it is attaching documents or just a note to a matter or many matters for one client; linked to which staff member performed the function for audit purposes.

You can design and import your own reports and invoice templates in addition to the included templates.

Billing is comprehensive, and includes tracking for stale accounts payable.

The capabilities and features of the HoudiniEsq system are too many to extol the virtues of in this testimonial, therefore you must try it to see for yourself!

Support

The HoudinEsq staff CARE! The initial support contact may be over email, however if required, the follow up can be via a quick phone call, and even a remote Zoom session if / when needed. The issue is worked on until resolved.

Recommendations

When I host students; I back up the working version, and restore a bogus limited data set to permit the student to work in the HoudiniEsq application, this provides enough exposure to get a sense of the HoudiniEsq application, for how and or why it has been the best docketing solution I have worked on to date. Once the student is done, I quickly, and easily roll back the data to the working version and the student no longer has access but they have had a opportunity to see how powerful, and capable the HoudinEsq application is for themselves, even with a limited data set.

I have extolled the many virtues of HoudineEsq to business buddies in any kind of profession where they are required to docket their billable hours.

One of the compelling attributes of the sole proprietor version of the HoudiniEsq system is it’s price point but only until you get to work on the system and come to appreciate it’s strength and flexibility.

The way HoudiniEsq runs on the iPad is phenomenal. I would say the price of the iPad is justified even if you just use it for the HoudiniEsq App. It will pay for itself. I walk into court with just my iPad now.

Intellectual Property

Far better than the other management software out there! I love the functionality of Houdini. While some of the features are not the EASIEST to use, the customer support to walk you through it is amazing, and done on the spot. The program itself is amazing, works exceptionally, and their support is the best I’ve ever seen!
