The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing chooses HoudiniESQ

Earning a reputation as an innovator and an emerging leader in law practice management software, LogicBit Corp. announced today that the State of California Department of General Services (DGS) and the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) has awarded a multi year 7 figure contract to LogicBit Corp.

LogicBit's web-based legal practice management product HoudiniESQ will replace the agency's current legal software system supporting 800 concurrent users and will be hosted in the Cloud. The State of California's decision to choose a web-based product for DGS and DFEH comes right on the heals of signing a Cloud computing deal with Microsoft to provide web-based email services to the state's employees. The State of California's Department of General Services began its search for a on-line Legal Practice Management product in early 2010. The state is consolidating its IT operations and was looking for ways to use cloud computing to cut cost, improve operational efficiencies, reduce the use of paper, and provide better service to California residents.

The DFEH is the largest state civil rights agency in the country. It was established by the Legislature in 1959 as the Division of Fair Employment Practices and was initially part of the Department of Industrial Relations.

DFEH receives and investigates discrimination complaints in its nine offices throughout California. The regional/district offices handle employment, public accommodations and hate violence cases, three district offices handle housing cases, and a special investigations unit focuses on systemic discrimination cases statewide. In addition, there are three legal offices which prosecute cases. DFEH routinely provides technical assistance to employers, business establishments and housing providers regarding their responsibilities under the law. The Department is part of the State and Consumer Services Agency and is administered by a Director appointed by the Governor.

One Product to Replace them All

We had been experiencing problems with our Time Matters database management software and were told that we needed to upgrade or change it before we lost our data.

We have used Time Matters for over five years and it continuously required costly upgrades. We didn't think upgrading again was a good decision especially since it did not have the billing components we needed integrated. LexisNexis also wanted to retroactively charge us a “support” fee. We didn't feel it was appropriate for them to charge us for “support”, especially since we have had to use Time Matters certified technicians to repair and customize our software throughout the entire time period we have used the software! Another requirement was that we needed a program that could do what our current billing program could. Currently we use Timeslips by Sage. We like the program, but it was inconvenient to flip back and forth between the two programs each time we wanted to make a time entry.

Our total cost to upgrade our current systems (including Timeslips, Time Matters, and a ridiculous Time Matters’ retroactive “support” fee) was about $5,000.00. This seemed a little crazy. It was time to start searching for replacements. We looked at AMICUS and Rocket Matter. Amicus was too pricey and lacked some features we required. Rocket Matter seemed interesting but we were concerned about the security of our data. The program lacked email integration and a comprehensive set of productivity tools found in products like Time Matters and AMICUS.

Enter….Our Choice. We love HoudiniESQ. It is a comprehensive legal practice management system that includes email management, contact management, document management and a strong billing module into one cohesive product. HoudiniESQ was substantially less than AMICUS and Time Matters and did not require extensive customization in order to get it to work for our firm.

Our HoudiniESQ consultant, spent about 1.5 hours with me online showing me the different features of the program and how they could alleviate many of the issues and headaches our office was experiencing, such as managing documents and emails from within Time Matters. What a terrific product! HoudiniESQ is a great, the real time access to our data via our mobile devices was a big plus as well.

All in all, we found this to be the most comprehensive program that would meet our needs for a substantially lower cost than any other program evaluated. Great value!
