Installation Notes

When installing HoudiniESQ you should be logged in as administrator.

IMPORTANT During the install you will be asked for a domain name. Do not enter your website's domain name unless HoudiniESQ is being installed physically on the machine the domain name resolves to. If your website is hosted by a 3rd party then do not enter your website in the domain field.

Install as simple local application - Local Network Install
To run Houdini locally simply let the HoudiniESQ installer select the domain name for you. In this case it is usually the machine name that the product is being installed on. This is true if you are planning on installing onto a laptop to use locally or onto a network server that you will access over your local network.

Install as remotely accessible application - My Private Cloud
If you have a static IP you should install HoudiniESQ on the machine the IP resolves to. Enter the domain name assigned to the IP in the domain name field. You and your staff should be able to login securely locally as well as remotely.

In either situation you MUST make note of the complete URL to login. On Windows we provide a quick link menu item under the HoudiniESQ menu. On OSX and Linux we do not provide shortcuts. The install application will display the URL you should use. We suggest you bookmark it for easy access later. Here is an example URL, http://my_domain.com/houdini/esq Please note, HoudiniESQ uses standard ports 80 and 8080. If 80 is in use or not available the installer will try 8080. If 8080 isn't available you will have to enter the port that you want HoudiniESQ to use. Here is an example URL using a port http://my_domain.com:8080/houdini/esq.

You will be asked to provide two sets of passwords. One will be the administrators password. You should guard this password. The second is the IRIS password. IRIS is the Houdini Information Repository and Indexing Server. This is what manages all documents. Think of it as your virtual file cabinets. The password is treated like a cabinet key. You give this password to all staff members that will need to check in and check out documents from the repository. This is just a safe guard since documents contain some of the most sensitive information. The IRIS password is useless without first being logged into Houdini.

Do not reinstall or reregister - License provisioning can take up to 24hours, our provisioning server may be busy so be patient.

When registering do not use punctuation or & in any of the registration fields. If you do you will get a "Bogus info" warning screen. A clean registration looks like this.

After installing you should use the product in full screen mode. Most browsers support full screen by clicking F11 at the Houdini login screen. If you have a ton of silly toolbars you won't be able to use Houdini to its full potential especially on a laptop or on the Apple iPad.

Once installed moving HoudiniESQ is not recommended as it will invalidate the license and will require re-registration.

  • OS WIndows, Linux, OSX
    We suggest 64bit OS such as OSX or Windows 7 but it is not required.
  • 1.2mghz CPU or greater
    The more cores the better.
  • 200mb Disk Space
    This does not include document storage and database storage needs.
  • 2 gig of Ram
    Houdini does not require 2 gig of ram but 2 gig provides room for Houdini and other programs without having to perform disk swapping which has a severe impact on OS performance. Houdini typically only requires 200 MB. With each seat requiring an additional 5mb but can go as high as 12mb during peak use. A good rule of thumb is 500mb for the first 10 seats and 200mb for every 10 seats thereafter. Running Houdini on most recent laptops should be no problem at all

    OPTIONAL - Only necessary if you want to get to your data over the internet. This assumes that the machine hosting HoudiniESQ is at the end of the IP. Router or firewall configuration may be required if it is not.
